Taormina, with a population of around 10,000, is in southern Italy in the region of Sicily. It was once an outpost for the Naxis. The Romans ruled the small town under the name of Tauromenium. It was a winter home for many during the Edwardian times and home to a film festival in the 1950's. Now it is the ideal place, summer or winter, for a week or weekend, Taormina provides some of the best views of Mount Etna. There is much to see and do in Taormina. The 4th century Hellenistic Theater, enlarged by the Romans in 2 AD, is the second largest ancient theater in Sicily. Wander the Corso Umberto, Taormina’s main street, with its 15th century palazzo now bars, craft shops and boutiques or visit Palazzo Corvaia, built in 1410, with its crenellated exterior front with twin windows and a Gothic doorway leading into an inner courtyard. Travelers can also go up Monte Tauro to visit the Castell di Taormini sitting on the site of an ancient acropolis.
