Bernate Ticino Hotels and Accommodation
Just 25 kilometers to the west of Milan is the town of Bernate Ticino. The town has a significant Roman history. A dig in 2005 by the Soprintendenza per I Beni Archeologici della Lombardia uncovered a necropolis with more than a dozen tombs that date from the first century A.D. The ruins tell a story of a small village that was based on agriculture and trade. The modern city benefits from its location near Milan because many commuters have made their home there. There are two main sights in Bernate Ticino. The first is the Church of San Giorgio. Construction started in 1498, but it has gone under several restorations. The current incarnation of the church was done in the 16th century, though the crypt below still contains earlier tombs. The church’s bell tower also has an interesting construction of a series of small arches called bifore. The other main attraction is the Palazzo Visconti, which was built to be the residential portion of the church complex.
