When you walk along the streets of Milan, you are walking on top of streets that were once part of the ancient Roman empire. The city of Milan was once called Mediolanum and was an important Celtic center before the Romans arrived. Today the remnants of the former empire can be found all across the city. You can still find part of the ancient city wall and one of the towers that were built around 300 A.D. The circus, or arena, was built in the 3rd century A.D. and the bell tower still stands at the arena as well. Other ruins include the Imperial Palace, the Forum, the Basilicas and the Baths of Hercules.
