Staying inside the ‘inner ring’ of Milan is a good idea if you are visiting the city for tourism. To the southwest of the city center, budget hotels near the Park of the Basiliche in Milan are both available and not too far from the main tourist attractions. There is an interesting story behind the Park of the Basiliche, which is one of the public parks in Milan. This public park was created as a sort of afterthought to some changes made to buildings outside of the Basilica di San Lorenzo. In 1934, when some buildings were taken down from around the basilica, it opened up some green space. With a few planning adjustments a park was created, connecting the land around the Basilica of San Lorenzo and the Basilica of Sant’Eustorgio. This is why the park’s name means ‘the park of the basilicas.’ When you visit, be sure not to miss the Roman ruins in the park, the San Lorenzo Columns (Le colonne di San Lorenzo).
