When you step outside of Milan’s Stazione Centrale (Central Station) Railway Station, you are certain to notice the Pirelli Building. Italians call it the Grattacielo Pirelli (Pirelli Skyscraper), or the Pirellone, which roughly translates as the big Pirelli.
The tower is built in the same location that the company’s 19th century tower sat. It was constructed in 1956 by order of Alberto Pirelli, the company president. It is still the tallest building in Milan at a height of 417 feet or just over 127 meters. Today, the building is the head office of the Lombardy regional government. However it is still very much a symbol of the economic boom that started in Milan in the late 1950's. Take the metro just four stops and you’ll be in the middle of the historic city center.
