One of the most significant historical Afragola attractions is the Castle, located in the heart of the town; the first documents that make mention of the castle date to around the end of the 1400s. The castle was probably built a short while before this, most likely around the 1420s, by the Capace-Bozzuto family, who at that moment was in possession of the fief of Afragola. According to legend and tradition, the castle actually became the residence of Queen Joan (Giovanna) II of Anjou. Originally, it was a vast square structure protected by four towers and surrounded by a moat, which was later filled in.

In the year 1571 it was sold to the “universitas”, which at the time was equivalent to today’s municipal authority. It was then sold in 1726 to Duke Gaetano Caracciolo who restored it to some level of glory, given the fact that it was in serious decline. Towards the end of that century it was again in decline and became an orphanage. Currently, the castle is occupied by the “Istituto Suore Compassioniste Serve di Maria”, or, roughly, the “Institute of Compassionate Sisters Who Serve Mary”; it houses an elementary school and a preschool, managed by the nuns, and a youth center managed by a social services organization.
