Anacapri attractions include splendid beaches and interesting historical monuments; one of the island’s most famous tourist attractions is La Grotta Azzurra, or the Blue Grotto. This grotto is known throughout the world for its vastness, the intense blue color of its interior and the brilliant white color that objects immersed in its waters assume. As with other marvelous grottoes in Italian seas, the Blue Grotto can be entered by renting a small rowboat steered by a local fisherman. To pass through the grotto’s low and narrow natural opening, you’ll have to lie flat on the boat’s bottom. The opening to the grotto, in the rock wall of the sea cliffs, is about 2 meters wide and about 1 meter above the level of the sea.

Once inside, the fisherman abandons his oars and pulls the boat further into the grotto by grabbing a chain fastened to the entrance of the grotto. Once your eyes adjust to the change in light, you will be overwhelmed by a crystal blue color, in a space whose ceiling goes from about 7 meters in height to about 14 meters. There are various “rooms” in the grotto, such as the Galleria del Pilastri and the Sala dei Nomi. The blue color of the grotto is due to the fact that sunlight enters through an underwater window that opens up directly under the point of entrance, undergoing in this way a “filtering” process on the part of the water, which only allows the color blue to emerge.
