The Campi Flegrei, or Phlegraean Fields, constitute one of the most important sights in Bacoli. In reality, the Campi Flegrei are not only located in Bacoli, but encompass a large area to the northwest of the city of Naples. This area is included between Naples itself, capo Miseno and Cuma. Essentially, the Fields is a volcanic area, or a caldera, which is dotted with slightly elevated craters, volcanic lakes and hills covered in thick vegetation. The name “Flegrei” comes from a Greek word meaning “to burn”. There is one volcanic system in the Campi Flegrei, called the “archiflegreo”, which has profoundly impressed itself on every single characteristic of all the towns included in its territory.

The Greeks gave the area this name to illustrate the volcanic nature of the land, where you can still see fumaroles rising from the ground. They associated it with Flegra, the location where the mythic battle between gods and Titans took place. Besides checking out the innumerable signs of volcanic activity, tourists also enjoy visiting the huge number of monuments preserved within the Campi. An archeological museum has been created in Baia that will illustrate the history of the Campi Flegrei, which in ancient times saw the founding of the most ancient city of Magna Grecia, Cumae, founded between the 7th and 8th centuries BC.
