The Castello di Baia, or Baia Castle was constructed in a strategic position, from which it dominated the vast expanse of sea that extends from the Gulf of Pozzuoli to the Acropolis of Cuma. Its location and its defensive structures, such as walls, moats and drawbridges, rendered the fortress virtually impenetrable. Traditionally, it is said that the castle was built over the remains of a vast residential complex of Roman origin, known as “Caesar’s Villa”. The house of Aragon began work on the castle in the year 1495, in anticipation of an invasion by the French king, Charles VIII, though further work was done by the Spanish viceroy, Pedro di Toledo, between the years 1538 and 1550.

The final construction work on the castle led to its current appearance and its star shape. The castle maintained its original function of military fort up until the end of the 19th century, and throughout those centuries it was witness to various attempts at attack. From the 1920s to the 1979s, the castle housed an orphanage, and during World War II, it housed a military prison. It now houses one of the most important Bacoli attractions, the Archeological Museum of the Campi Flegrei, which displays information regarding the most important archeological discoveries in the Flegrei area.
