Bacoli tourism is heavily dependent the numerous archeological sites in the area. One of these is the Cento Camerelle, or “One Hundred Small Chambers”. Traditionally, this site was known as the “Prisons of Nero”, perhaps due to the maze-like character of the site’s layout. In reality, this site is what remains of a vast complex of cisterns responsible for supplying water to an important Roman villa. The cisterns were constructed most likely around the first century AD and the villa to which they belong was most likely that of the famous Roman orator, Ortensius Ortalus.

The structure is found underground, on two levels, independent one from the other, on a tuff cliff side overlooking the sea. The lower level, which is the oldest, is composed of a series of orthogonal tunnels that were at one time covered by vaults. There is one tunnel that tourists can walk down today, which opens out onto a splendid marine vista. The upper structure is composed of a large cistern divided into four naves, separated by columns that support a barrel vault. Up until the last century, some walls were actually decorated with frescoes. Many illustrious visitors, such as Goethe, Shelley and the kings of Naples, have explored the Cento Camerelle.
