One of the most impressive Barano d’Ischia attractions is the structure known as I Pilastri, or “The Pilasters”. If you're staying in one of the Baia Domizia hotels, ask the front desk for directions to this attraction. I Pilastri is actually composed of a huge aqueduct constructed in the 16th century, built to transport water from the Buceto spring to the center of the city of Ischia. The structure is characterized by two orders of pilasters, with a pyramidal lower section and a square upper section. The dual order of pilasters is interrupted only when the structure crosses the state road and when it meets Faiano hill. At these points, there is one majestic arch. The stonework is made of lava rocks, while the lower arches also contain bricks.

The viceroy made the decision to construct the aqueduct in order to manage Ischia’s water needs. Initially, problems were encountered in the construction of the aqueduct and work was suspended. Almost a century passed and in 1627, Cardinal Girolamo Rocca had work on the structure started up again. To help fund the work, the people of Ischia were subjected to a very heavy tax on cereal goods. But once the fresh, clean water arrived, even in the summer when cisterns would normally dry up, the people were more than happy to have paid the tax. To remind the people and anyone drinking water in Ischia of the people’s sacrifice to build the aqueduct, there was written on the structure, roughly, “These waters were obtained by sacrificing food”.
