The modern Santa Maria di Loreto Mare Hospital, or Loreto Mare Hospital for short, is not the original hospital in this area. There was originally a convent on the site, Santa Maria di Loreto, which was built in 1537. The complex included a garden, the church, and a monastery. It was the monastery that was eventually turned into a hospital in the 19th century. It stood there until it was destroyed by bombings during World War II.
