The province of Nuoro is located on the eastern side of the island of Sardinia; it is bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea. The capital city of the province, also called Nuoro, is found at the foot of Mount Ortobene and was inhabited before the 7th century. The city has been dubbed the “Athens of Sardinia”, thanks to its intense cultural life and numerous historical monuments. Check out the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Neve, constructed in the 19th century in neo-Classical style and the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte, built in the 1600's. There are also a number of museums to enjoy in the capital. Being located on the coastline of an island, the province of Nuoro is also a favorite tourist spot for its splendid beaches and clear water. Head slightly out of the province to the town of San Teodoro; attractions here include the entire town, an increasingly popular beach resort.
