The Cathedral (Duomo) of San Lorenzo is the most important of the religious Abano Terme attractions, located in the historical center of the city. It was originally founded in the second half of the 10th century, but the majority of its current structure and organization dates to the 18th century. Even the oldest part of the Cathedral was completed in two phases; the base was built around the year 900 and consists of unrefined “bricks”, while the upper part was built around the year 1200. Within the cathedral, you can find important works of art, such as many sixteenth century sculptures by the artist Tommaso Allio.
On the main altar there is the “Flagellazione” (The Flagellation”) by Bartolomeo Litterini, which dates to the beginning of the 1700s, and a Via Crucis by the artist Carlo Henrici. The Cathedral also boasts an amazing 1967 Tamburini organ, which has been recently restored to its original beauty. Finally, the Cathedral is in possession of an impressive bell tower that dates to around the year 1314, though some parts of it (mainly the base) date to an even earlier time, probably to around the 900s or even before.
