Though it lies in ruins and can no longer host mass, the Church of San Michele (Saint Michael), also known as the Church of Santa Maria di Campogrosso or La “Chiesazza”, is one of the most impressive sights in Altavilla Milicia. Most likely, this church was part of a monastery that was eventually abandoned and destroyed in the 16th century; it was probably inhabited by the loyal follows of the order of Basil of Caesarea, a Greek bishop that was very influential in the 4th century and who later was sanctified.

The church, built with massive square blocks, was characterized by an impressive door decorated with concentric, molded arches and by a ceiling made of large vaults. The overall structure of the church was robust and any openings were kept small, so the interior of the building was dimly lit. The interior possessed a single nave and contained an area dedicated to the clergy and the main altar. The style of the church was essentially Romanesque, but today only part of the outer walls and small underground chapel remain.
