A great deal of Bagheria tourism is centered on the numerous villas found in the city, which were constructed around the 18th century for various noble families. Villa Cattolica is one of these structures, built around the year 1736 for Francesco Bonanno, Prince of Cattolica. The villa was to be a summer residence, though the prince had it constructed in an elevated spot, so that he could keep an eye on the residences of other princes who had also chosen Bagheria as a summer getaway. The building was constructed in a style that still shows ties to an ancient medieval model, with crenellated walls, though there are definitely Baroque motifs present.

The imposing main door, along with other architectural elements, has a distinctive 16th century air. At the end of the 1800s, the villa’s owner attempted to add some color to the building and substituted almost all the original flooring with majolica pavement. This owner, Gioacchino Scaduto, also had the main hall decorated with frescoes. Throughout the years, the villa has assumed various functions, such as a makeshift hospital during a cholera epidemic, and a military headquarters. Today, on the first floor, the villa houses an art gallery dedicated to the local painter, Renato Guttuso. Guttuso’s tomb is located in the villa’s garden.
