Cefalù is a small fishing village in Sicily, located in the province of Palermo, nestled between the sea and the mountains. The town is essentially divided into two sections, and old section and a newer section. The older part of town is characterized by narrow, cobblestone streets, older buildings and monuments and a number of small boutiques and excellent restaurants. The newer part of town, instead, has supermarkets, gas stations and the like. Cefalù has become extremely popular in recent years, for the combination of its beach and the historical monuments that it contains.
The older part of town is dominated by the impressive Cathedral, founded in 1131. You can also check out the medieval washing place, where women did their washing up until a few decades ago. There’s also the Osterio Magno, once the residence of the Norman King Roger II and the Sanctuary of Gibilmanna, dedicated to the Madonna. Finally, check out the Temple of Diana, which dates back to the 9th century BC. If you’re looking to enjoy the beach but catch a little culture as well for a week or a weekend, Cefalù is the place to go!
