Hidden away in the heart of the Madonie Mountains is the town of Petralia Sottana in the province of Palermo, Italy. With its high Mediterannean climate of hot, dry summers, many people come here to get away from the colder climates in Europe. Other folks come to ski at nearby Battle Plan, at an elevation of about 1500 meters and tucked away amongst old beech forests, with all the lifts and facilities of a modern ski resort. But all who visit are charmed by the lush green mountain peaks and rushing rivers and streams of Madonie Park.
But the town of Petralia Sottana itself is also worth a visit. Archaelogical digs in the nearby Vecchiuzzo Cave have uncovered indications of civilization here that date back to the 3rd or 4th millennium B.C. The most popular tourist destination in the town itself is the Catholic Church known as the "Mother Church," which holds paintings by local painter Zoppo of Gangi, as well as baroque and neoclassical works made of gold and silver. Other common places to visit include the Church of St. Francis of Assisi and the Museo Civico (Civic Museum). Try to time your visit around one of the festivals held in the town: the Dance of Cordella on the third Sunday in August or the Festa della Castagna in the last week in October.
