Assisi is found in the central Italian region of Umbria, in the province of Perugia, along the foot of Mount Subasio. Though it was founded in Roman times, the current architectural and cultural personality of the town was most definitely developed in medieval times. Indeed, Assisi is extremely well known for the amazing preservation of its medieval nature, plainly visible in its monuments and defensive walls. It is also extremely popular for its religious spirit, having been the birthplace of the Franciscan order, and so there are plenty of religious monuments to visit.
There is the Basilica of San Francesco, consecrated in 1253. There’s also the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli, the seventh largest Christian church and the Basilica of St. Claire, where the body of St. Francis was originally housed. Lastly, Eremo delle Carceri is worth a visit; this is where St. Francis and his followers would go to meditate. As for non-religious sights, visit the Rocca Maggiore, or Major Fortress, originally built in the 1100's. Assisi is also home of the Calendimaggio, an annual historical festival held in May to celebrate spring. If you’re looking to step back in time for a weekend, Assisi should be your destination.
