Assisi tourism centers heavily on the religious sites that are located throughout the area. The Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli is one of these sites. The area known as Santa Maria degli Angeli is actually a borough of the larger city of Assisi and the Basilica is its most important church. Actually, the church is considered one of the Catholic world’s largest sanctuaries. Work was begun on the church in 1569 and wasn’t fully completed for 110 years. It is 126 meters in length, 65 meters in width and 75 meters tall. The cupola was the last thing included in the original design to be completed, in 1680.

What we see today is the result of renovations that occurred at the end of the 18th century, during work aimed at constructing the bell tower, at the beginning of the 19th century, during work aimed at repairing earthquake damage, and at the beginning of the 20th century, during work done on the façade. In 1930, a gold statue of the Madonna degli Angeli, the symbol of the church, was placed atop the façade. The interior of the church is in Doric-Neoclassical style, because of work done in the 1830s, and the apse contains a precious 18th century wooden chancel.
