Assisi is a small town in the Italian province of Perugia. The town currently has a population of 26,196. Assisi is of course most famous for having been the earthly home of St. Francis, one of the Catholic Church's most popular and enduring saints. St. Francis founded his mendicant order of the Franciscans in 1208. Two more Catholic saints were born here, as well: St. Clare, and the 19th century St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. There are so many important churches and religious monuments in the town, that all of Assisi is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A few of the many religious attractions in Assisi include the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, the Church of Sta. Maria Maggiore, and the Cathedral of San Rufino.
