Lisciano Niccone is a tiny little ancient village in the province of Perugia with lots of history. We first hear about the people of Lisciano following the Battle of Trasimene (217 B.C.), when the townspeople are said to have provisioned the ill-fated Roman soldiers that managed to escape. Once part of an important route of communication between Rome and Ancona through the Upper Tiber Valley, the town was fortified with a castle around the 11th century. A number of other small towns on the same communication route were also fortified with castles: these being Pierle, Danciano, Pugnano, Sorbello, and Reschio. Though in ruins today, this 11th century castle still warrant a visit nonetheless, along with a number of other sites in town: the ruins of the Abbey of Saint Benedetto, the Church of Saint Tommaso, and the Church of Saint Maria, delle Corti.

If you visit, be sure to climb the road leading to Tuoro to catch the beautiful view of Lake Trasimene. You can almost hear the elephants' trumpets and the sounds of a terrible battle raging if you are quiet enough. Be sure to taste the local cheeses and chestnuts if they are in season, and if you are lucky enough to visit in June when the Bringolo Festival takes place, you will definitely want to try the local pastas.
