Cagli Hotels and Accommodation
In the Marche region of Italy, just 18 miles to the south of Urbino is the town of Cagli. It has just over 9,000 inhabitants, and is actually built on the site of an ancient Roman village. The predecessor is believed to have been named Cale, and was found 24 miles to the north of Helvillum (now called Sigillo). Just another 5 miles away lies another series of ruins in the modern town of Piano di Valeria. Roman ruins are scattered across this area, which was apparently once a Roman military base. It continued to be the site of wars among the surrounding nobles until the town burned down in 1287.
Cagli’s current appearance is owed, in part, to the influence of St. Peter Damian, a very severe teacher at the Abbey of Fonte Avellana nearby. The saint believed that any ornate decorations on a building were a form of arrogance. However, there are some unique, decorative structures in the town which seem to flaunt this decree. The walled city has a number of gorgeous palaces, like the Palazzo Preziosi-Brancaleoni, Palazzo Tiranni-Carpegna, or the Palazzo Episcopale.
