The University of Pisa operates a beautiful garden in the city of Pisa, which you can visit for free Monday through Friday. These botanical gardens go by the name of the Orto Botanico di Pisa, and are located at via Luca Ghini 5. The garden has been here since 1544 while Cosimo l de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany was ruling. The famous botanist, Luca Ghini of Imola, is credited with creating the garden, which is the first botanical garden in Europe to be associated with a University. The structure built from 1591 to 1595 is also still standing, and is decorated with a seashell façade. Budget hotels near the Botanical Gardens in Pisa are well worth the time spent so book them well in advance of your trip.

During 1563, the garden was moved from its original site, which now houses the Medicean Arsenal. It relocated to a site near the Santa Maria Convent. In 1591, the Botanical Gardens moved once more to their present location. With this history, it is not surprising that the garden has a collection of objects that are housed in the Museo di Storia Naturale. There is also a library on the property, as well as a hothouse framed in iron, said to be one of the oldest in Italy. Besides the Botanical School, you’ll also find greenhouses, ponds and gardens, along with botanical collections. Discount hotels in Pisa near the Botanical Gardens are well appointed, and you will be surprised at the money you can save by using these accommodations.
