The Camposanto Monumentale, or monumental cemetery, is located on the northern boundary of the Piazza dei Miracoli, Cathedral Square in Pisa. It has the distinction of being the most beautiful cemetery in the world, according to many people who have visited it. It has been said that this cemetery was built around soil that was sacred, brought over from Golgotha by the shipload by the archbishop of Pisa around the 12th century. The structure on the grounds was built around a century later, after many burials had already taken place. This structure, Gothic in design, was built from 1278 until 1464.
Most of the tombs in the Camposanto Monumentale are located underneath the arcades, with several on the central part of the grassy area. The interior court is beautifully finished with many round arches that are decorated with tracery and mullions on the stonework. There are now approximately eighty-four Roman sculptures and above ground sarcophagi to admire, as well as frescoes on the walls, the oldest dating from 1360.
