    Palazzo della Carovana Details

The Palazzo della Carovana is located in Pisa, Italy, and is also known by the English-speaking citizens of this region as the Building of the Caravan. The structure was erected between the years 1562 and 1564 by a Giorgio Vasari, and in doing so, he also did much restoration work on the medieval Palazzo Degli Anziani. Some of the original remains, including a tower, can still be seen. New knights of the order of St. Stephen trained here for three years, and took training courses known as carovane, which means caravans in English. The Palazzo della Carovana is a very imposing structure, and is decorated using coats of arms, busts of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. There were six of them, and six busts are featured, all named Cosimo. You can also admire the graffito ornaments on this structure. There is a very pretty and wide staircase that goes up to the entrance of the building, as well as a wide roof that seems to set off the whole structure. The Palazzo della Carovana has been home to the Scuola Normale Superiore. This is an institute of higher learning that was founded by Napoleon in 1810.
