The Piazza dei Miracoli is located in Pisa, Italy. Piazza dei Miracoli means “Square of Miracles” and this name was given to the area by Gabriele d’Annunzio, an Italian poet and writer who mentioned the Piazza dei Miracoli in his writing. It is also known as the Piazza del Duomo. This entire area is walled, and is located in the heart of the city. It is a very popular tourist attraction, as there are four famous religious structures located inside the square.
The buildings include the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Duomo, the Baptistry, and the Campo Santo. The Leaning Tower is the freestanding bell tower, or campanile, of the Cathedral of Pisa. The tower leans because of a poorly built foundation. It is the third oldest building in the square. The Duomo is a medieval cathedral dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption, which was started being built in 1063 and today houses many architectural and artistic historical gems. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Piazza dei Miracoli is home to one of the main spots for medieval art in the entire world. The Campo Santo is a cemetery, and the Baptistry is the largest in Italy.
