One of the most impressive Abetone sights is the Ponte Sospeso, or the Suspended Bridge; the bridge is located on the road between the town of Bagni di Lucca and Abetone. It was inaugurated in the year 1922 and is one of the longest footbridges in the entire world; it is 220 meters long and found at a height of 40 meters (at the point of greatest height). The bridge is about one meter wide and is constructed with steel cables, anchored with thick chains to massive concrete blocks.

It also possesses guy ropes that render it more secure. Today, the bridge represents an important tourist destination, but was actually constructed as an important shortcut for those who had to cross the valley; indeed, there were many workers that lived on one side of the valley and had to go to work on the other side of the valley. Vincenzo Douglas came up with the idea of constructing the bridge and about two years after he proposed the idea, it had been completed and inaugurated.
