The Rock Pyramids are an important aspect of Abetone tourism; they were erected on the ancient border between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Duchy of Modena to honor one of the most important works of engineering in the history of the area, the construction of the Regia Modenese Way. On the Rock Pyramids you’ll be able to read inscriptions that claim that some of the most illustrious supporters of this feat were the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo and the Duke of Modena, Francesco III. The Regia Modenese Way connected the Grand Duchy of Tuscany to the Duchy of Modena (and therefore to the Hapsburg Empire); this new route was a strategic construction both in a military and in an economic sense.

The project began in 1766 and took about 10 years to finish; it required a great deal of engineering skill, as certain parts necessitated the construction of bridges, support structures and hairpin turns. As for the Rock Pyramids, each was constructed for one of the two Duchies; they each have marble elements and possess, on the side that faces the particular Duchy to which it is dedicated, the coat of arms and inscription of its respective sovereign. Each also has an inscription in Latin; the one dedicated to the Duchy of Tuscany exalts Duke Leopold as renovator of freedom and commerce, while the one dedicated to the Duchy of Modena highlights the military importance of the route.
