The ancient city of Scicli in Sicilia's south-western Ragusa Province has been the site of human habitation for over 5,000 years. It, along with other towns in the Val di Noto have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rebuilt after a major earthquake in the late 17th century, much of the city exhibits the baroque style that was popular at the time. Today, much of the town's industry is derived from tourism and greenhouse grown food crops that are found along the seashore. The Baroque city center is where most of the historic Scicli hotels are located. While the budget traveler can enjoy centrally located discount hotels, Scicli doesn't have a very long “off-season,” and rates tend to stay about the same throughout much of the year, especially given the large number of festivals in early spring and summer.

There is a great deal for history buffs to see and marvel at. Among the ruins of the Old Town, visitors may visit the Church of St. Matthew, which is a massive structure found atop a hill of the same name. There are many elaborate churches in town, but none have the same sort of flourishes and facade as the massive Chiesa di San Bartolomeo Apostol, found in the “new” town that dates to the early 18th century. There are several piazza and baroque building lining the Via Mormino Penna through the central city. This is also a site of several hotels in Scicli, though such accommodations tend toward being expensive.
