Flaminio Square is not a full-fledged square, or piazza, in Rome, but rather a small square, or “piazzale”. The only attraction in the piazzale is the train station “Flaminio – Piazza del Popolo”. The world famous Piazza del Popolo is virtually adjacent to the Flaminio station and even contains the Flaminio Obelisk. This obelisk is 24 meters in height, though with its base and cross reaches a height of 36.5 meters. It was constructed during the times of the pharaohs Ramses II and Merenptah, around the 13th century BC.

The obelisk was originally situated in the Temple of the Sun in Heliopolis and was brought back to Rome in 10 BC by Augustus. Once in Rome, it was situated in the Circus Maximus. It was later found, broken in 3 pieces, and after it was fixed it was placed in its current location. Other attractions in Piazza del Popolo include the ancient church, Santa Maria del Popolo, built in the 11th century on the spot where Nero was buried, as well as Porta del Popolo, a gate in the Aurelian walls, and the “Twin Churches”. When visiting the eternal city, you may want to check Rome hotels in the vicinity of piazzale Flaminio, as you’d be close to public transportation; Rome cheap hotels may be difficult to find here, though, as this is one of most central areas in the city.
