The Trevi Fountain, or Fontana di Trevi, is the spectacular fountain that was made famous by Federico Fellini’s film, La Dolce Vita. It is considered one of the most majestic and famous fountains in the world and is one of the most visited monuments in the entire city of Rome. The fountain has very ancient origins and is one of the oldest Roman aqueducts. The fountain that you see today was created in 1732, on order of Pope Clemente XII. It is a splendid Baroque construction and is considered an architectural, sculptural and engineering masterpiece. The central part of the fountain is composed of a large niche, which belongs to the building behind the fountain, and where the imposing figure of Ocean is located; Ocean is riding a shell that is pulled by seahorses.
On the sides of the central niche there are the statues of Health and Abundance, as well as bas-reliefs representing the Virgin. Legend has it that if you stand with your back to the fountain and you throw a coin in, you will most definitely return to Rome. After you throw in your coin, head out to visit the Spanish Steps, Flaminio Square and Venezia Square.
