Gianicolo is a hill in Rome, though it is not part of the original seven hills on which Rome was built. At the base of its eastern slope there is the historical Trastevere district, while the western slope constitutes the oldest part of the modern Monteverde district. Gianicolo was named after Giano (Janus in Latin), the ancient Roman god with two faces. This hill is one of the best places for a stroll, with a beautiful view overlooking Rome from on high. Indeed, there is the “Passeggiata del Gianicolo”, created in the 1800s, which is essentially a large road that crosses the entire hill that allows visitors to enjoy the scenery. It is considered one of the most beautiful promenades in the city.
Along the promenade, you’ll find a statue dedicated to the Italian general, Garibaldi, and busts of his troops, who defended the new Italian Republic from Austrian and French troops in 1849. In Garibaldi Square, you’ll find a cannon that, since 1904, fires a shot at noon. Gianicolo hill is also home to the famous Lighthouse, which was a gift from the Italian community in Argentina. Once you view Rome from Gianicolo hill, head down to visit the area of Testaccio, the Baths of Diocletian, as well as the Trevi Fountain.
