San Lorenzo is a major basilica in Rome dedicated to Saint Lawrence. This major tourist attraction is very close to luxury and discount hotels in Rome near San Lorenzo Basilica, making it easy to walk from the hotel to this historic landmark. The history of the basilica is less clear that others, however in 1300 the Pope Boniface VIII, rebuilt the church, added an abbey and named the new structure San Lorenzo in Panisperna after the poor in the area.
The church has undergone several additions and changes, with the latest being additional depictions of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Lawrence, completed in 1894. The church itself is designed with three separate chapels surrounding a central nave. Within the church there are many works of art, including a painting of the Stigma as well as the Immaculate Conception. There are 14th and 18th century crucifixes in the church, as well as several statutes. One chapel, the Chapel of St. Bridget, was actually where she was buried until moved to Sweden. A painting of her praying for the poor is featured within the chapel.
