Tiberina Island is just what its name implies, an island in the middle of the Tiber River, located around the area where the river passes by Campidoglio hill. It is famous for having housed the temple to Asclepius, the Greek god of Medicine, which was constructed around the 300s BC while a plague was devastating Rome. Not much remains of the temple today and much of what does remain is housed in the Archeological Museum of Naples. To this day, the island houses a medicine-related structure, the famous Hospital of the Fatebenefratelli. In ancient times, besides the temple to Asclepius, there was also a temple to Pan, which was he the only temple to this god in the city of Rome.

The very nature of the island obviously kept it isolated from the main city and throughout history it has been used when isolation was needed. Certain nobles would retreat to the island for protection, and a lazaretto, or quarantined space, was set up on the island during times of epidemics. After checking out the island, head over to the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Monument of Vittorio Emanuele II and the Pineta Sacchetti.
