Castello Sant Rome

Originally built as a funerary structure and used as a fortress during the early Middle Ages, the Castello Sant' Angelo (also called “Mole Adriana”) now stands as a Castle bearing four circular towers (each named St. Matthew, St. John, St. Mark, and St. Luke, respectively), one at each of the four corners. The entire structure is enclosed within an outer wall having bronze gates with decorative peacocks to serve as a reminder of the building's funerary origin. This esteemed monument features a statue of Hadrian proudly raised on a podium, and has a wide, circular body engraved with the names of all those who were buried inside. The most breathtaking feature of the Castello Sant' Angelo would have to be the panoramic terrace yielding a splendid view of the surrounding city. Castello Sant' Angelo is open to the public 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., daily (last admission is one hour before closing), and is closed all public holidays as well as the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month. Bus lines can be chartered at either the Lepanto Station or the Piazza Cavour. The Castello Sant' Angelo, with its awesome showcases and interesting history, would be an exciting addition to any historical and cultural excursion in Rome.
