The Monument of Vittorio Emanuele II, or Victor Emanuel of Italy, is often called the Vittoriano and is located in Piazza Venezia. It is an enormous structure in white marble, constructed in 1885 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Kingdom of Italy. Considered the symbol of the unification of Italy since 1921, it contains what is called the “Altar to the Homeland”. Finally, two sentinels continuously watch over the tomb of the “Unknown Soldier”, which contains the remains of an unknown soldier who fell in the First World War. The monumental structure is composed of an enormous staircase, flanked by winged lions and two bronze statues of Victory.

The Altar to the Homeland contains a statue of Rome, while the middle of the entire complex is occupied by a bronze equestrian statue of Victor Emanuel of Italy. Behind this, a grandiose portico with columns that measure 15 meters in height and more winged Victory statues complete the structure. After you take in the monumental nature of this attraction, check out the Pineta Sacchetti, the Botanic Garden and the Church of San Giovanni in Laterano.
