As with the Vatican Museums, where the collections are divided among different, yet related museums and buildings, the Capitolini Museums have a large wealth of artistic works that are distributed among two buildings and a variety of different rooms and galleries. The two buildings that make up the museums, connected by an underground passageway, are located in Piazza Campidoglio and constitute one of the oldest public museum structures in Europe. A number of classical sculptural masterpieces are located in these museums, along with important 16th and 17th paintings by European artists.

The Palazzo Nuovo mostly houses sculptural works, including a precious bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius and busts of emperors and philosophers. The other building, Palazzo dei Conservatori, also contains sculptures, including large marble body parts from a statue of the Emperor Constantine, as well as the Capitoline wolf. This building also houses the Pinacoteca, though, which is an art gallery. Here, you’ll find paintings by the likes of Titian, Caravaggio and Velazquez.
