The Museum collection of the Vatican, more appropriately known as the Vatican Museums because of the subdivision of the numerous works of art, contains over 500 artistic masterpieces that the Catholic Church has collected over the centuries. These masterpieces date to varying historical periods and range from papyri to candelabras. The Sistine Chapel and the papal apartments frescoed by Raphael are also included in the list of works that visitors can admire while walking through the Museums. In 2006, the archeological excavation of a necropolis was added to the viewable collection.

There is the Vatican Art Gallery, which contains paintings by such great master artists like Michelangelo and Raphael, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, which contains works of art by artists such as Carlo Carrá and Giorgio de Chirico. You can also visit the Pio-Clementino Museum, founded in 1771, which originally housed ancient and Renaissance works of art. Today it also houses various types of sculptures and contains at least 54 halls, many of which are called “Museums” themselves. There are a number of other areas that you can visit as well. If you’re not too exhausted after your museum trip, check out the Arch of Constantine, the Pineta Sacchetti and the are of Tor Sapienza.
