The Trastevere Train Station is another of the important train stations in the city of Rome. The station was initially located more towards the center of the city, in what is today Piazza Ippolito Nievo but then moved into its current position in 1911. The old station was used as a merchandise stopover and a vehicular garage until the 1950s. Today, the Trastevere station is located in the “rione”, or “region”, by the same name and in the vicinity of the Portuense district. It is situated at the junction point of the Roma-Fiumicino Aeroporto line with the Roma-Viterbo line.
This area contains a few “lunghitevere”, or riverfront streets, Villa Farnesina, a 16th century aristocratic villa, and the Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, while the Portuense district contains the Forte Portuense, a 19th century fortress. After checking out the Trastevere and Portuense areas, head over to the Church of San Giovanni in Laterano and Campo dei Fiori.
