The Università La Sapienza, or La Sapienza University, is the largest European University, among the top universities in terms of the number of students registered, and it is the oldest of the three Roman universities that are funded by the government. It was created in the 14th century, thanks to Pope Boniface VIII, and was used mainly for religious instruction. The novelty of the university, though, was that it was not directly connected to the Papal court. The university became a lay university essentially in the 1900s.
