    Galleria Colonna Details

The Galleria Colonna is located in some of the halls of the Palazzo Colonna, an enormous and majestic building that takes up a few city blocks. Since before the year 1000, the area occupied by the Palazzo contained a castle and various other houses and structures that belonged to the Counts of Tuscolo, ancestors of the aristocratic Colonna family. The family most likely got its name from the nearby Trajans Column, which is evidence of its important influence in the area. The entire building is an impressive work of architectural art, conserving a splendid Baroque style. The interior of the building, especially the Galleria, is sumptuously decorated, with frescoes, antique furniture and the like.

The Galleria itself spans various rooms, as mentioned, and is actually where the familys rich historical collection of art is concentrated. This is considered one of the most important private art collections in the city. There are works by Guercino, Pietro da Cortona, Tintoretto, Ghirlandaio, along with Dutch and French landscape painters. After visiting the Galleria Colonna, head over to the Doria Pamphilj Gallery, the Modern Art Gallery, and the Palatine Museum.
