The Palatino is considered to be the original center of what was to become the incredible city of Rome. The buildings on and around this hill, later to become the Imperial Headquarters and a Palace, were known as The Palatino, making this one of the most impressive and historic areas in the ancient city itself.
Be sure to stroll through the many gardens in the district, some which date back centuries. The aviaries, which date back to the 16th century, are almost all that remains of the original massive gardens contained on the grounds of the Palatino. In addition, the view of the Tiber River from the ruins is second to none throughout the city. You can also view some of the remains of the ancient first huts, believed to date back to as early as 754 B.C.
