The Basilica considered to be the ecumenical mother church of the Roman Catholic faith. It is also the cathedral of the Church of Rome, and is the church of the Bishop of Rome, who is also the Pope. Although located outside of the Vatican City the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, as it is known in Italian, is also part of the Holy See.
San Giovanni was built over the ancient fort of the Imperial Calvary Bodyguard. The Basilica itself was built in 324 A.D, although many reconstructions and renovations have been completed on the Basilica. One of the most ornate rooms in the Basilica is the Papal Cathedral, which is located in the apse of the church.
