Hotels in Testaccio
Testaccio is one of the many specific neighborhoods or districts within the city. Testaccio district is a great option for those that want to experience the authentic side of Rome, a bit away from the major tourist areas. This isn't to say that Testaccio isn't also full of wonderful things to see, and one of the popular areas is Monte Testaccio. This is a man-made hill that is built on discarded pots, or testae, that date to early Roman times. The name Testaccio is derived from the name of the ancient pots or amphoras.
Testaccio is close to the Tiber River, providing a great place to stroll and explore. In addition, the open market in Testaccio brings in vendors and buyers alike and bartering is all part of the experience. One of the most unique sights in Testaccio is the Pyramid of Gaius Cestius. This landmark was built between 12 and 18 BC as tomb for the very wealthy magistrate Gaius Cestius. Although the interior is sealed, the exterior view of this unusual building is dramatic to say the least.
