The Università La Sapienza, or La Sapienza University, is the largest European University, among the top universities in terms of the number of students registered, and it is the oldest of the three Roman universities that are funded by the government. It was created in the 14th century, thanks to Pope Boniface VIII, and was used mainly for religious instruction. The novelty of the university, though, was that it was not directly connected to the Papal court. The university became a lay university essentially in the 1900's.
It includes twenty one faculties, more than one hundred thirty departments and institutes, one hundred twenty seven specialized schools, twenty one museums and more than one hundred fifty libraries. Obviously, it is one of the most important universities in Italy, and in Europe. After taking a look at this ancient scholarly institute, take a walk along Via Cola di Rienzo, head over to the Spada Gallery and admire the Trevi Fountain.
