One of the Atrani attractions that receives a large number of tourists is the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, or la Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena. It was initially constructed in the 13th century by the people of Atrani to thank the Madonna for having freed them from Saracen occupation. The church was actually constructed over the remains of an ancient medieval fortress. Though it dates to the 13th century, it has been renovated and modified numerous times throughout the centuries, in 1570, 1669, 1763 and 1852.

It has a Baroque-style façade that contains two bronze doors, twins of those in Amalfi, constructed in 1087. Actually, the façade has been considered the only example of Rococo art along the Amalfi coast. It also has a cupola in majolica and a square bell tower, the latter dating to the 16th century. In its interior you’ll find an impressive painting by Andrea da Salerno depicting the "Incredulità di San Tommaso", or the “Incredulity of Saint Thomas”, as well as paintings depicting the Resurrection, Saints Peter and Paul, and Mary Magdalene with Saints Andrew and Sabatino. Thanks to its beauty and the beauty of its natural surroundings, the church has become the symbol of Atrani.
