Atrani is a village of only 965 inhabitants, situated along the Amalfi Coast of the Italian province of Salerno. It is one of the smallest comunes (roughly, "municipalities") in all of Italy. The picturesque village stands right on cliffs that overlook the sea, its white houses and red roofs merging with one another in mind-bending patterns reminiscent of Escher drawings. It is, indeed, no surprise that Atrani was the subject of one M.C. Escher's earliest engravings, which depicted the view of the village from above, its rooftops forming an alarming non-Euclidian-looking structure above the sea.
