At the base of the Montealbino, near the road the heads to Mercato San Severino, the city of Nocera Superiore is a true blend of the modern and the ancient. The ancient Roman town of Nuceria Alfaterna was once here, and the remnants of that settlement are visible throughout the town. The most obvious historical monument is the ancient city wall, surrounding the interior of the old city. But in the Pareti zone, visitors can set foot on an ancient Roman amphitheater as well.

The Battistero Paleocristiano di Santa Maria Maggiore, or Paleo-Christian Church, is the main religious sight in the city. It was built in the sixth century, and its dome and edifice are excellent examples of Byzantine architecture. Inside, ancient, colorful iconographs are still partially intact on the walls, and a baptismal pool is surrounded by fifteen beautiful columns. Nearby, an ancient Necropolis in Pizzone contains tombs from multiple centuries past.
