Capo Caccia Isola Piana Natural Protected Marine Area Details

A large part of Alghero tourism is focused on the natural beauty of the area; one of the attractions that is popular with tourists, especially outdoor enthusiasts, is the Area Naturale Marina Protetta Capo Caccia Isola Piana (or the Capo Caccia Isola Piana Natural Protected Marine Area). The area is characterized by the spectacular and significant development of large limestone formations, most of which date to the Cretaceous; you can admire the amazing views of sheer cliffs over the sea, some of which are around 320 meters high. Within the park, visitors can enjoy stretches of forest, complete with a number of marked hiking and walking trails.

A vast amount of sea is also included in the parks territory; indeed, many scuba divers and professional fishermen flock to the area for its beautiful marine resources. Make sure you inquire into whether you can head into the water or engage in fishing, though, as there are many highly protected areas that are not open to the public; these areas are only accessible to scientists and other such professionals. Fortunately, there are a number of areas that the public can access; among these, there are a great many natural grottoes that can be visited, both by land and by sea. The most famous land grotto is the Grotto of Neptune, while divers love the underwater Grotto of Nereo; the latter is the largest underwater grotto in Europe.
